Bob and Debi Cowan were both raised in separate parts of Ontario, Canada; both had dramatic conversions to the Christian faith in the midst of darkening lifestyles, and then were brought together by God in Banff, Alberta. Since their marriage in 1982 they dedicated themselves to pastoring four different Canadian churches, and Bob taught for 4 years at Briercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Through a variety of wonderful circumstances they discovered Roatan and sensed a call to go and help the Island’s poor and needy. For the past five years they have created and established a number of projects to “help Islanders help themselves”.
“Our goal is to move people from despair to hope, and then from hope to hope in Christ!” The “Made in Roatan” Gift Shop located near the Port of Roatan Cruise Ship dock, and a special online gift shop, are just two of the many projects God has prompted them to pursue to benefit many Island families. Beads and supplies are donated through cruise ship guests who ‘catch the vision’ of what they are doing, and through personal supporters. They teach impoverished locals to make products for sale and then help them sell those items to supplement their family resources.
Bob and Debi also raise funds to provide emergency support for those cast into poverty through circumstances not of their choosing. They work with other groups and individuals on the Island to supply emergency food relief, clothing and school supplies to those in need. They also raise funds to provide and oversee child sponsorships throughout the island.
Bob loves to disciple people one-on-one. One of Debi’s passions is leading Bible studies and encouraging spiritual life through public speaking among the women of the island.
It is their hope that the demonstration of their faith in Jesus Christ will prompt others to discover for themselves the joys of a relationship with God through a living and active faith in Jesus Christ. It truly is ‘more blessed to give than to receive’.
